WHO WE ARE
FREEDOM FUND AND FREEDOM FUND PAC
Freedom Fund of Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa was created in 1990 to protect freedom of choice for Iowans. Freedom Fund is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization supported entirely by separately raised donations and managed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa Board of Directors.
The mission of the Freedom Fund of Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa is to foster and preserve a social and political climate favorable to reproductive health and to the exercise of reproductive choice.
Toward that goal, Freedom Fund engages in lobbying, issues education and pro-choice voter identification, education and mobilization.
In 1998, Freedom Fund established a nonpartisan political action committee, Freedom Fund PAC, to support state and local candidates who advocate full access to reproductive health care and responsible sexuality education.
Our Successes
Thanks to the work of committed pro-choice activists across the state and key legislators Planned Parenthood's advocacy arm has fought off a flurry of anti-choice initiatives in recent years.
During every political cycle since its inception Freedom Fund PAC has provided significantly increased support to candidates who support reproductive freedom. The PAC's goal is to establish pro-choice majorities in Iowa's House and Senate.
Leading up to the 2008 Iowa Caucuses, Freedom Fund mobilized hundreds of activists throughout the state to ensure choice was front and center as the nation focused attention on Iowa's role in the presidential candidate nomination process.
Legislative successes include: Creating a requirement for insurance companies to cover the HPV vaccine if they cover other vaccines. A state line item was also created in the budget for family planning assistance for low-income women and families.
Most recently, Freedom Fund held its annual event, themed as "Invest in the Political Pie" that raised over $50,000 for Freedom Fund PAC's 2008 electoral work, ensuring that Freedom Fund can work to protect the right of Iowa families to make their own reproductive health decisions.
